Zoologist Career Information: Becoming a Zoologist

Zoologists study wildlife and how they live and grow in their natural surroundings, usually specializing in a specific type of animal. The following is a brief description of some of the duties of zoologists as well as their educational requirements, salary, and employment outlook.

For those who like the idea of having an 'office' outdoors, consider a job as a zoologist. Zoologists work closely with animals and observe behaviors, determine illnesses, and insure the proper maturity of the subject. They must be familiar with lab equipment, research techniques and computers.

What is a Zoologist?

There are several specialties of zoologists. Research zoologists work mainly in laboratories while conducting experiments on a particular animal. Those experiments are observed, depending on the experiment to help determine the health and well being of the animal. Other zoologists are more commonly associated with zoos where they usually maintain and direct the activities that an animal must properly go through. They spend most of their time out in the field, enduring the same conditions as the life forms they're studying. Some work very closely with animals to observe their daily habits and to insure proper habitat.

Educational Overview to Be a Zoologist

Zoologists have a background in Biology, Mathematics, and Chemistry. Most employers look for a Bachelors degree in biology and a Masters degree in zoology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field. They must be prepared to work with animals and usually work alone or in small teams. The government, colleges and universities, utilities, environmental consulting firms, and conservation groups employ zoologists.

Zoologist Occupational Outlook

According to iseek (www.iseek.org), the second quarter 2005 average hourly rate for zoologists was $26.23. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) estimates that the employment of animal care and service workers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2012.
